Watermarks help readers recognize status or intended use. Labels such as DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, SAMPLE, or INTERNAL REVIEW can reduce accidental misuse when a document is circulated before it is final.

The best watermark is obvious enough to notice but restrained enough that the document remains usable. That balance depends on the page background, typography, position, repetition, and whether the file will be viewed on screen or printed. A live preview helps, but the downloaded PDF remains the final authority.

Step-by-Step Workflow

1. Upload the PDF, confirm its page count, and preview more than one representative page.
2. Enter concise text such as DRAFT - 8 SEP 2026 or REVIEW {page}/{total}; avoid secret information that will repeat in the file.
3. Choose a font and color, begin with low opacity, then adjust relative size and rotation until the content stays readable.
4. Choose a single position or repeated tile density, then target all, odd, even, or custom pages.
5. Export with a descriptive filename and inspect light, dark, landscape, first, and last pages before sharing.

Balance type, color, opacity, and angle

Font and color establish tone, while opacity decides how strongly the mark competes with the document. A lower opacity is less intrusive; a higher value is easier to notice but can interfere with reading. Relative size is calculated from each page's shorter dimension, so the result remains broadly consistent across mixed page sizes.

Rotation is measured in degrees. A negative angle slopes the text downward from left to right, zero is horizontal, and a positive angle slopes it upward. DocuKit adjusts the rotated text bounds to keep a single stamp inside the physical page, but every unusual page size still deserves inspection.

A single stamp is clean and supports nine positions. Repeated tiles are harder to overlook and offer sparse, standard, and dense patterns, but they cover more content. Page targeting can apply either layout to all pages, odd pages, even pages, or a validated custom selection such as 1, 3-5, 8.

PDF.js renders reduced-size JPEG thumbnails for browser preview, so small text can look softer there. The output does not use those images: pdf-lib draws watermark text directly over the original PDF page content and saves the result with compressed object streams.

The built-in Helvetica, Times, and Courier font variants cover common Latin text, numbers, and punctuation. Emoji and some writing systems are outside their encoding; DocuKit reports unsupported text instead of silently substituting broken characters.

Security and records limitations

A visible watermark does not encrypt a file, restrict printing, prevent screenshots, or prove ownership. Someone with PDF editing software may be able to alter or remove it. Use permissions, encryption, controlled sharing, and formal records systems when access control matters.
