How to Rotate PDF Pages and Fix Mixed Orientation

Overview

A PDF can contain portrait, landscape, sideways, and upside-down pages in the same file. This often happens when a phone changes orientation during scanning, a landscape table is inserted into a report, or two scan batches are combined. Rotating the whole file can fix one group while breaking another, so the first job is to identify exactly which physical pages need attention.

Step-by-Step Workflow

1. Keep an untouched copy of the original PDF, then upload the working copy and wait for all page previews to appear.
2. Scan the thumbnails from first to last and note which pages are sideways, upside down, or intentionally landscape.
3. Use the global left or right action only if every page needs the same correction; otherwise rotate individual page cards in 90-degree steps.
4. Read the pending rotation labels and verify that upright landscape pages have not been changed accidentally.
5. Create the rotated PDF, download it, and inspect the first, last, and every individually changed page at normal zoom.

Choose global or page-by-page rotation

Global rotation is efficient for a complete scan that entered the feeder in the wrong direction. Page-by-page rotation is more reliable for mixed files because each click affects only the selected physical page. A landscape chart may already be correct even though it looks different from nearby portrait pages, so judge the readable direction of the content rather than trying to make every thumbnail the same shape.

Rotation is cumulative in 90-degree steps. One clockwise action turns an upright page right, two actions turn it upside down, and four actions return it to its starting orientation. Rotation is different from deskewing and cropping

Page rotation turns the entire rectangular PDF page. It cannot straighten a photograph captured at a two-degree angle, remove a dark scanner border, or rotate one image independently from surrounding text. Those jobs require scan cleanup or image editing before the pages are assembled into a PDF.

Verify document features after export

A newly saved PDF can behave differently even when the pages look identical. For records, contracts, and official submissions, retain the source and compare the result in the viewer used by the recipient.

Password-protected or damaged files are rejected because their pages cannot be safely inspected. Unlock an authorized file in suitable software first, save a clean copy, and then rotate that copy. Do not treat a successful thumbnail as the only proof that the final document is correct.
